France’s former President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday. Wife Carla Bruni stood by him.
Nicolas Sarkozy (70) has to be detained for five years. The former French president was partly guilty of alleged campaign money from Libya on Thursday in Paris. The politician received support in court, among other things, from his wife Carla Bruni (57), who did not give away from the side on arrival and when leaving the court building.
The couple, who had been married since 2008, appeared hand in hand to the verdict and even waved into the cameras of the photographers present in advance. Carla Bruni, who became famous as a model in the 1990s, was casually dressed in black and dark blue with white sneakers, and also wore sunglasses.
Carla Bruni reports on Instagram after judgment
After the verdict, she spoke up. Bruni wrote about a photo from the court: “Love is the answer.” To do this, she added the hashtag “#lahainenaurapasdessus” – in German: “The hatred will not win.”
For the singer and former first lady, it is not the first process that she experiences on Sarkozy’s side. Already with previous legal disputes she was publicly included in her husband.
Bruni was not the only family member who came to court to support: Sarkozy’s adult sons Pierre, Jean and Louis also traveled to stand by their father. Sarkozys and Bruni’s daughter Giulia (13) were not there.
Nicolas Sarkozy guilty about “criminal conspiracy”
Nicolas Sarkozy, who was President of France until 2012, was accused of accepting illegal funds from Libya for his 2007 presidential election campaign. The court released him in some points, but the judges saw sufficient evidence in the central preliminary point of the “criminal conspiracy”. The judgment is: five years in prison.
Sarkozy himself denies the allegations and speaks of a politically motivated procedure – his lawyers have already announced an appointment.
