Nico Santos returns to the anniversary relay of “The Voice of Germany” – and reveals why he is particularly confident of victory this time.
The 15th season of “The Voice of Germany” starts on September 25th. Rea Garvey (52), Shirin David (30), Michi Beck (57) and Smudo (57) from the Fantastischen Vier and Nico Santos (32) take a seat for the anniversary relay. In an interview with the Spot on News news agency, he revealed why Santos is particularly confident of victory this year and what the show means personally.
You are part of this year’s “The Voice of Germany” relay. How does it feel to be back?
Nico Santos: It is as if I wasn’t gone. “The Voice of Germany” is like a big family – also behind the scenes. I can now pass on everything I’ve learned in recent years. And I ask myself – like the other coaches – again and again: How can it be that so many talents are still undetected? “The Voice” is simply never counted because there are always new people, new talents, who think: “The fifteenth season – now I’m registering.”
This year’s season is also an anniversary relay. What do you think, why “The Voice of Germany” is still so enthusiastic about the audience after all these years?
Santos: I think it’s a symbiosis between the coaches and the talents. There are always these incredible voices that force you to continue watching. And of course also the combination of the coaches. In this season, however, it has a different dynamic than in previous years: it is a little more the clash between Old School and New School – even if the others don’t like to hear it. (laughs)
What makes “The Voice of Germany” so special for you personally?
Santos: I often know the coaches privately and sometimes I try to understand why they have turned around or not. That alone is a reason for me if I don’t sit on the red coach chair myself. But above all, the talents “The Voice of Germany” make it so special. I got to know so many musicians and voices at “The Voice” with whom I am still in contact and even wrote songs. It’s really nice.
What is the best voice in Germany for you?
Santos: A special voice simply triggers emotions. There are singers who sing well and there are singers who don’t sing so well, but have emotions. And there are these voices that simply have both. These talents sing perfectly and have a unique voice, but they also hit exactly the feelings you want to hear. I think the most important thing is that you find a voice that is unique and that you haven’t heard yet.
This year there are again the comeback days …
Santos: Yes, the comeback days is back-the fourth comeback day. I was the very first comeback-stage coach in 2019 and this year it is Calum Scott. He is one of the nicest, most likeable, coolest and warmest guys I know in the music industry. And he is still a blatant star. He sang with my finalist Gugu Zulu in 2021 and at that time I told him that I could see him on a coach chair. And indeed: in the semi -finals and in the final he will take a seat next to us on one of the red chairs. I’m really looking forward to this moment. But as a comeback-stage coach, he can still become a problem for us. (laughs) I have already heard that he wants to snap at least two of my talents …
What does that do with you if you have to let good artists go?
Santos: It breaks my heart. To send bad news is the worst of me. Smudo and Michi, but also Rea, have done it so often and now have a thicker fur than me, but I can’t. It is very emotional for me. But you shouldn’t forget: No matter in which phase you fly out at “The Voice of Germany” is not the end of your career. Most of the time it is just the beginning.
This year’s coaches have all been part of “The Voice of Germany”, but never in this constellation. How was that for you?
Santos: It was just super fun. Before you sit on the chairs, you meet again beforehand and the dynamics were very different, but very exciting. We viben so well. We all appreciate ourselves very much as a coaches, but it was also very a generation thing. Sometimes you noticed that very much. (laughs)
As a coach, they have never been able to win “The Voice of Germany” …
Santos: I’m there for the third time now. That means: I will be the winning coach. All good things are three. (laughs). Since my “The Voice of Germany” beginnings, I’ve definitely become more certain – and maybe a little more strict. I think I can show what the future and career can be after “The Voice of Germany”. I think you can learn from what I pass on. But in the end it is also a TV show and a game that you want to win. I am very excited to see what will bring with it this year. We are a very diverse and cool team and I think we take the victory home this year.
Would you look back on the previous seasons a little differently?
Santos: No. If I make mistakes, I can only learn from it. But honestly, I believe that I have not yet done a single battle or talent. I gave you everything I could give you. I like to look back on the past seasons and I would also like to look at the battles from my team on YouTube.
The filming can certainly be very exhausting …
Santos: Yes, definitely. But “The Voice of Germany” is just beautiful for everyone involved. You put in so much work, you worry, because in the end you just want the talents shine and feel good.
