Ukraine war: Madonna’s bitter reckoning with Putin

It’s been a long time since Madonna was so angry: in a 30-second Instagram video, the singer attacks Vladimir Putin – and compares the Russian president to another dictator.

Much has been written about Madonna’s appearance lately. She gets younger every year, now even her daughter Lourdes looks older than the “Like a Virgin” singer. With all the reports, however, it is forgotten that Madonna has always had much more to offer than an attractive cover: the pop star has always been political and had something to say.

However, Madonna has not been seen as angry as she is now for a long time. In a 30-second clip published on Instagram, she addresses the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“I’ve listened to your lies and all your stories. And I can’t take it anymore,” sings the 63-year-old: “I’ve listened to your lies and all your stories, and I can’t take it anymore.” Who she means by that, she makes absolutely clear in the pictures: Russian President Vladimir Putin can be seen, as well as pictures of people from Ukraine and of combat operations.

Then Madonna holds her outstretched middle finger in the camera, and the video leaves no doubt who the gesture is for. Shortly before the end, Adolf Hitler also appears, with whom she apparently wants to compare Putin.

She linked the angry video to calling on her 17.6 million followers to provide humanitarian aid to the millions of Ukrainians suffering from the war. In her Instagram bio, she posted a link to the charity’s website, where there is also the option to donate.

At the same time, Madonna made it clear once again that Putin is violating all existing human rights agreements and has no right to erase Ukraine’s existence. She ended her posting with the dramatic appeal: “We support you, President Zelenskyj! We pray for you and your country! God bless you all!”
