A Russian space officer has threatened to crash the International Space Station on Twitter. Elon Musk wants to prevent that.
A symbol of peace in international cooperation is the International Space Station ISS, which has been in orbit for 8,500 days. Four Americans, two Russians and one German are currently stationed on the ISS. On the night of Saturday to Sunday, a Russian space officer said Russia could force the ISS out of orbit and crash it over North America or Europe. This is what SpaceX founder Elon Musk (50) brought to the scene. In the event that Russia carries out the threat, SpaceX should be ready to bring the ISS back to Earth safely.
Until a few days ago, it would have sounded like the plot of an end-time sci-fi movie, but since Russia invaded Ukraine, even such scenarios are becoming possible. A Russian officer tweeted: “If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from an uncontrolled crash?” Elon Musk responded shortly thereafter and his company SpaceX.
Elon Musk does not need many words
Because apparently not all Twitter users agreed on what Musk could have meant with his tweet, one user summarizes it again. The Russian official asked who could save the ISS should it go out of orbit, to which Musk posted the SpaceX logo in response to the question. The billionaire picks up this tweet himself and confirms briefly and concisely: “Yes.”
The ISS weighs 500 tons and orbits 320 kilometers above the earth. The American space agency NASA has already announced that nothing will change in the ISS program for the time being.
