Getaway by car to the heart of the Pampas steppe

Located almost 30 kilometers from the city of Santa Rosa, the Parque Luro Provincial Reserve is a protected area of 7,600 hectares, of which 1,600 hectares are destined for tourist use, and its main objective is the conservation of the ecosystem of the caldén forest and the associated flora and fauna, such as wild boars and foxes that are frequently observed when entering it, as well as the sightings of more than 160 species of birds that inhabit the terrestrial and aquatic environment.

The origin of the property was as a hunting ground, being the first in the country, and it happened there that Pedro Luro, its creator, introduced the first red deer and European wild boar in Argentina. The Park has several self-guided trails of low difficulty, and one of the main attractions that arouses the interest of visitors is the Castle converted into a Museum; As a preliminary step, a visit to the Interpretation Center is required, which helps with a description of the place, the species that inhabit it and the history of its creation, to situate the visitor in time and space.

The visit to “El Castillo” consists of a tour of approximately one hour through the French-style building whose construction dates back to 1905 commissioned by Pedro Luro and later sold to Antonio Maura; During it, through objects and photos, the Guide with his story transports to the time of origin, to the lifestyle of its inhabitants who were part of Argentine history and mainly of the growth of the province.

One of the aspects that stand out is construction details that were advanced for the time, such as the design of underfloor heating, or the system of pipes through which water was supplied to the entire building.

During the months of March and April, the red deer bellows, which in the middle of the caldén forest shakes with the deep bellow, as a sign of being prepared to fight against other males of its species, to conform and maintain his harem of females, which will allow the continuity of the species. The sound is very strong and heartbreaking, the guided tours that are organized from the Reserve consist of sightings in small groups from the viewpoints, silently and in total respect for nature, becoming a unique sensory experience.

  • Activities in a pampas estancia

To describe the Pampas steppe is to assimilate its landscape to the African steppe, long stretches of calden forests and the different shades of yellow that predominate and disappear on the horizon. Terra Pampa by Caichue, (almost 150 kilometers from Santa Rosa), is a lodge that recently opened its doors, designed to offer a 360° experience, where the senses can fully connect with the environment.

The observation on full moon nights is another of the strong points along with the gastronomy (an all inclusive proposal) by the Pampas chef Leo Hernández, where everything is homemade (pastries, jams) and preferably with ingredients from the province. Pampean meats, Patagonian lamb coexist in the options along with the vegetarian proposal that some visitors request.
