Michael Keaton: Tears for his nephew

Michael Keaton moved the audience to tears with his speech at the SAG Awards. He dedicated his award to his late nephew.

With his acceptance speech at the SAG Awards, Michael Keaton (70) made the hall laugh and think – and finally moved to tears. He dedicated the prize to his deceased nephew, who had been addicted to drugs. The speech can be viewed.

After being nominated for Best Actor in a Series for his role in Dopesick, Keaton was a little delayed on the scene. He explained this with the words: “Sorry, short trip to the men’s room. It’s very full, by the way.”

Narcissistic Nights

The Hollywood star then admitted that many people would describe that night as “selfish” and “narcissistic,” an argument he couldn’t disagree with. Keaton said he could spend a week talking about what he’s grateful for. He considers himself blessed to be able to do what he does.

A production like “Dopesick” can “start thought” and create conversation or actual change, Keaton said. Then he spoke of the “massive injustice” in the world. “When you talk about addiction on ‘Dopesick’, the way to heal the problem is to accept that you have a problem. Not just our country. The entire world. Economically, ethnically, socially, financially, it there is massive injustice in the world.”

“It hurts”

After thanking the cast and crew, Keaton got particularly emotional. In a tear-choked voice, he dedicated his award “given the subject” to his nephew Michael and sister Pam. His nephew had died a few years earlier from fentanyl and heroin use. “I lost my nephew Michael to drugs and it hurts,” said the actor on stage in front of a visibly moved audience.

“Dopesick” is about the opioid crisis in the USA.
