What Recruits, the new Netflix series, is about
Recruits is set in 1990 and follows Cameron Copea bullied teenager in high school, who decides enlist in the United States Marine Corps with his best friendRay McCaffey. Ray comes from a military family, which adds social and personal expectations to the narrative.
Cameron’s decision is not only a way of seeking a new direction, but also of escape from a space where you cannot fully show who you are.
Already in the training camp, the story tests bodies and minds: the physical challenges are tough, but so are the prejudices, secrets, and internal tension of those who must live together under strict rules and even hostile to diversity.
The series addresses what it means to live in an environment where Being gay was not only frowned upon, but could have legal consequences. or worse, which turns the struggle to accept oneself into a constant battle.
