What “Clean” is about
The film adapts the novel by Alia Trabucco Zeran and delves into the relationship between Wake and Juliaa girl who lives in an emotionally distant family environment. Over the course of the summer, both build a private world, where closeness is intertwined with class barriers and the subtle abuses that arise in unequal caring relationships.
The film combines tenderness and tensionshowing how a seemingly harmonious bond can transform into a dynamic of power and vulnerability. Sotomayor stressed that her interest lies in “document emotions rather than ideas”exploring how care can become a form of invisibility or demand. The atmosphere of the film oscillates between the intimate and the uncomfortable, reflecting a social reality where inequalities are naturalized.
