What Animal is about, the series that is all the rage on Netflix
The plot of Animal follows Antón, a rural veterinarian in Galicibecause he is going through an economic crisis: his rural clients can no longer pay for his services, so he ends up receiving, symbolically, eggs as compensation. Faced with the impossibility of sustaining his traditional way of life, he accepts move to the city to work with his niece Uxía at a boutique pet clinic called Kawanda, where he must deal with lawsuits, “whims” and very different urban clients to farm animals.
The clash between two worlds (the austerity of the countryside and the logical aesthetics of urban consumption of pets or “dogs”) generates moments of humor, tension and reflection. Antón will have to adapt, but also preserve his professional ethics against business practices. Animal explores themes such as modernity, economic inequalities, rural identity and how human and animal relationships reveal less obvious social contradictions.
