Popstars returns to television. The reality show that gave rise to Bandana and Mambrutwo of the most remembered youth bands of the 2000s, will return to the small screen.

The history of Popstars on Argentine television

The format, created for discover a group of young talents in order to form a band chosen by a jury of renowned producers, it premiered in 2001 through Blue Television and returned with a second season in 2002 on the ball channel.

In those first two seasons, based on the original New Zealand format, the jury was headed by Afo Green in the role of director, accompanied by Pablo Ramirez, Magalí Bachor, Fernando Lopez Rossi and Marcelo Iripinowho was in charge of the choreography.

In its first edition, Popstars: Your show is about to begin marked a before and after in Argentine television by bringing together more than 4,000 young people from all over the country who participated in a casting massive with the aim of forming a pop band made up exclusively of women.

After several months of auditions, rehearsals and elimination stages, the format gave rise to a musical phenomenon that would leave its mark on an entire generation: Bandana, the group made up of Lissa Vera, Lourdes Fernández, Virginia Da Cunha and Valeria Gastaldiwho released their self-titled debut album in late 2001 under the BMG International label.

Likewise, in October 2002, Popstars gave rise to Mambruthe group made up of Gerónimo Rauch, Emanuel Ntaka, Germán “Tripa” Tripel, Milton Amadeo and Pablo Silberberg.

Both bands were an unprecedented massive musical phenomenon in the country. Bandana broke up in 2004 and since 2016 they have had some comebacks but never with their full lineup. For its part, Mambrú remained active until 2005 and until now there has never been an official return of the band.
