Oscar winner Diane Keaton was an icon in Hollywood, her death at the weekend shocked many of her companions. Now Keaton’s family is speaking out.
Diane Keaton’s family has revealed the actress’ cause of death: She died of pneumonia on Saturday at the age of 79, her relatives told People magazine. In a statement, the magazine said: “The Keaton family is very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received in recent days for their beloved Diane, who passed away on October 11th from pneumonia.”
The Hollywood star’s family continued: “She loved her animals and worked tirelessly to help the homeless. Therefore, donations in her memory to a local food bank or animal shelter would be a wonderful and very welcome honor for her.”

Diane Keaton was known for her roles in The City Neurotic, three Godfather films, What Your Heart Desires, Reds, Marvin’s Daughters, Book Club and Father of the Bride. In addition to her screen career, she was revered as a fashion icon.
After the news of her death, there were numerous tributes from her friends, former co-stars and fellow actors, including Bette Midler (79), Francis Ford Coppola (86), Kate Hudson (46), Steve Martin (80) and Jane Fonda (87).

Diane Keaton’s health was reported to have deteriorated rapidly in the months leading up to her death, People reported. A friend of the actress, who has two adopted children, told the magazine that “she deteriorated very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.” He added: “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with so much strength and zest for life.”
The anonymous source continued, according to the report: “In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family members, who chose to keep everything very private.” Even long-time friends wouldn’t have known exactly what was going on.
