Taylor Swift triggers a rush of visitors to a museum in Hesse with “The Fate of Ophelia” – a special event was sold out immediately.
The influence of pop star Taylor Swift does not stop at the German art world: Since its release as part of the album “The Life of a Showgirl”, hundreds of fans have made a pilgrimage to the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Wiesbaden. The reason: A painting by the German Art Nouveau painter Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Heyser (1857-1921) apparently served as the inspiration for central scenes in the video.
The music video opens with Swift floating on the water in a white dress – a clear nod to Heyser’s portrayal of Ophelia, the tragic lover in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” In the literary original, Ophelia loses her mind and drowns in a river. It is not known whether Swift was really inspired by the painting or whether she had already visited the museum – for example when she was in Germany for the “Eras Tour”. As “DW News” reports, the museum’s attempt to contact the singer has so far been unsuccessful.
Heyser’s work, which is said to have been created around 1900, hangs in the facility’s permanent exhibition. According to a spokesman, several hundred additional guests visited the museum last weekend, including specially traveled fans from Hamburg and families of US soldiers stationed in Wiesbaden.
“One of the few advantages of living in Germany,” writes a TikTok user of the painting in the Wiesbaden museum. “We drove six hours from Hamburg to see something only Swifties will understand”, . “The trip was definitely worth it!”
Museum’s Taylor Swift event sold out immediately
The museum promptly responded to the hype and announced its own event: On the afternoon of November 2nd, the museum invites you to a special short tour that links Swift’s song with the story of Ophelia. Anyone who appears in the “Swiftie look” or dressed as the tragic Ophelia even gets free entry. Shortly afterwards the account announced: The event is sold out!
The rush is no coincidence: According to streaming services, “The Fate of Ophelia” is the most listened to song in one day from “The Life of a Showgirl”, Taylor Swift’s twelfth studio album, which the singer released on October 3rd.
