Valery Gergiev: Munich’s mayor dismisses conductors

“Immediate separation”: Mayor Dieter Reiter has dismissed Valery Gergiev, chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (63) dismisses the chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. Valery Gergiev (68) had previously failed to comply with Reiter’s request to distance himself from Russian President Vladimir Putin (69) and his war of aggression.

“Munich is parting ways with chief conductor Valery Gergiev,” confirms Reiter. As a result, “there will be no further concerts by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under his direction from now on.” The mayor of the state capital had asked the conductor to “clearly and unequivocally distance himself from the brutal war of aggression that Putin is waging against Ukraine and now especially against our twin city of Kyiv.” However, Gergiev did not comment.

No “clear signal” from Gergiev

Reiter explains that he expected Gergiev to reconsider and revise his “very positive assessment of the Russian ruler”. The 68-year-old did not do this. In the current situation, according to Reiter, “a clear signal for the orchestra, its audience, the public and city politics would have been indispensable in order to be able to continue working together”. This leaves “only an immediate separation”. A successor for the conductor has not yet been announced. “We will clarify everything else as soon as possible,” said Reiter.

Shortly before that, the artist agency Gergievs had also parted ways with him. Other international houses had recently drawn the same conclusions, including Carnegie Hall and La Scala in Milan.
