Anna Netrebko: Bavarian State Opera cancels engagement

In the future there will be no performances by the Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko at the Bavarian State Opera.

The Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko (50) will no longer appear at the Bavarian State Opera. Your commitment will be canceled, confirms Serge Dorny (60). The head of the house explains this step by not sufficiently distancing the singer from Russia’s war of aggression. Netrebko had previously written on Instagram that she was “not a political person”.

“Because of Russia’s terrible war of aggression against Ukraine and the lack of sufficient distance from Valery Gergijev and Anna Netrebko, the Bavarian State Opera will cancel the existing engagements”, . For the State Opera, “respect for one another and dialogue with each other are absolutely essential for peaceful and humanitarian coexistence”.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (63) had previously dismissed Valery Gergiev (68) as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. There will be “no further concerts from now on […] under his leadership,” Reiter confirmed. Gergiev had not complied with the request to “clearly and unequivocally distance himself from the brutal war of aggression that Putin is waging against Ukraine and now especially against our twin city of Kyiv.”

Netrebko does not see himself as a “political person”

In the past, Netrebko has been criticized several times for her closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin (69). Among other things, she wrote: “I want this war to stop and people to be able to live in peace.” She also has many friends in Ukraine and “the pain and suffering […] break my heart.”

At the same time, however, Netrebko emphasized: “I would like to point out, however, that it is not right to force artists or any public figure to make their political views public and to insult their fatherland.” Like many of her colleagues, the 50-year-old is “not a political person”.

“As a cultural institution, respect for one another, integrity and dialogue among one another is absolutely essential for us. This is the only way to ensure peace and humanity”, . The forthcoming 4th Academy Concert on March 7th and 8th will therefore take place under the motto “Plea for Peace”. The program is “equally an appeal against any kind of military conflict as well as a request to keep up the hope that mankind will come to a peaceful coexistence”.
