The leader of Blur and Gorillaz appeared in a video interview with Mexican publication Sopitas, where he reflected on the spectacle of Britpop and how it continues to permeate pop culture to this day.
Blur and Oasis faced each other in the famous “Battle of Britpop”a chart battle that took place on August 14, 1995, where both bands faced off by releasing singles on the same day. Blur went with “Country House” of “The Great Escape”while Oasis launched “Roll With It” from his influential album “What’s The Story (Morning Glory)”. The news has been so infamous that last year it was revealed that a West End play based on that turbulent time was on the way.
Both bands have since become big household names: Oasis are currently on their comeback reunion tour and Blur are hosting their own comeback shows and releasing their new album “The Ballad Of Darren” in 2023.
Now, Albarn has spoken about that period of time and told Sopitas: “Oasis have done a very good job of making Britpop feel like the biggest thing in the world. I don’t know how they do it, or how they continue to do it. “They just stick with it, but they do it very well.”
Damon Albarn on the “Battle of Britpop”: “Happy to admit defeat”
Albarn has previously spoken out about the Battle of Britpop, revealing he was “happy to admit defeat” in this summer’s legendary rivalry.
“Well, it was obvious, wasn’t it?” said Albarn. “I think we can officially say that Oasis won the battle, the war, the campaign, everything.”
He also called himself “prophetic” in predicting the eventual Oasis reunion, which he claimed would happen in 2023.
“Well, you can’t think that two brothers can’t reconcile sooner or later. It’s a good thing, in my opinion,” he explained.
However, Albarn said he would not be attending any of the Oasis shows due to his busy schedule.
