If the deal closes, Butler would play James “Sonny” Crockett, alongside Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, the affable South Florida detectives played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the classic 80’s television series. (Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx They played the same roles in the first film adaptation, Miami Vice 2006, directed by Michael Mann).
Butler rose to the top of Hollywood’s leading men list after playing rock and roll legend Elvis Presley in Elvis of Baz Luhrmannwhich earned him a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award, as well as an Oscar nomination for best actor. Butler began her career on teen shows such as Zoey 101, Switched at Birth and The Carrie Diariesthen made his Broadway debut in the revival of The Iceman Cometh and got his breakout role on the big screen in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood of Quentin Tarantino. With projects like Dune: Part Twowhere he played the sociopathic villain Feyd-Rautha, and, more recently, the crime thriller Darren Aronofsky Caught Stealing On his resume, Butler has become one of the most versatile stars in the industry.
What the new Miami Vice movie is about
Kosinski, whose recent forays into existing intellectual property with Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie were innovative and lucrative, now explores the “glamor and corruption of mid-80s Miami” with a new version of Miami Vice. The film, according to the official synopsis, is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the iconic television series that influenced culture and set the style for everything from fashion to film.” Production on the project, which will be filmed for Imax, is expected to begin next year. Miami Vice is scheduled for August 6, 2027.
Dylan Clark and Kosinski are the producers, while Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy wrote the script, based on the characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Mann.
