In the photo, Muniz, who played Malcolm on the seven-season series from 2000 to 2006, smiled alongside Berfield, 39, and Masterson, 45, backstage during filming.

“They told me not to post this yet, but then I heard this song,” Muniz captioned the image, which he set to Malcolm’s song, “Boss of Me” by They Might Be Giants, on Instagram.

What will the return of Malcolm in the Middle be like?

Muniz, who also shared the image in X, was announced in December 2024 to be part of the cast that would return for a revival on Disney+.

The four-episode miniseries, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfairwill also feature performances by Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarekwho played the brothers’ parents, Hal and Lois. Erik Per Sullivanwho played the younger brother, Dewey, will not return to the series and his character will be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

In September, Muniz teased on the Lightweights Podcast with Joe Vulpis that the revival will be different than anything viewers expect, adding that it’s “hard to fit 20 years of material into four 30-minute episodes.”

“It’s pretty shocking, to be honest,” he said. “But I think people will be very happy with what they’ve created.”

The project, Muniz explained, was initially conceived as a two-hour reunion film before the series’ creators realized there was too much to cover. Muniz insists that there is now “closure” for his character. It follows an adult Malcolm who returns home to his girlfriend Tristan (Kiana Madeira) and his daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten) to celebrate his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. Its premiere on Disney+ is scheduled for 2026.

“I had a great time, without exaggeration, filming this reboot,” said Muniz. “I loved it so much, much more than I ever imagined.”

Cranston, 69, revealed during a June episode of Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade that it was “amazing” to see his TV kids now “around the same age I was when we started.” He recalled that Per Sullivan thought the revival was “fantastic”, but that in the end he did not want to return as Dewey. “He actually goes to Harvard,” Cranston explained. “He’s very smart and right now he’s doing his master’s degree at Harvard. He said, ‘Oh my God, no, I haven’t acted since I was 9 or something! So I’m not interested.'”

The next project is something Cranston has been “pushing for for the last 10 years,” with series creator Linwood Boomer helping to bring it to light after many conversations.
