Two weeks ago, Kanye West said he wanted his wife Kim Kardashian back. Now the two are officially divorced.
The celebrity marriage of US reality star Kim Kardashian and rap mogul Kanye West is finally history: A judge in the US west coast metropolis of Los Angeles divorced the two superstars, who had been married for almost eight years, on Wednesday. While Kardashian attended the court hearing virtually, the rapper, who has since been renamed Ye, was represented by a lawyer. He did not object to the divorce.
Kardashian, 41, filed for divorce in February 2021 after nearly seven years of marriage. It took more than a year for the divorce to be finalised. The 44-year-old West tried to prevent the divorce and, among other things, appealed to his wife via social networks to return to him.
Kim wanted the marriage to end
“I really want a divorce,” Kardashian said in a recent court document. “I think the court’s ending of the marriage will help Kanye accept that our marital relationship is over and move on to a better path that will help us peacefully raise our children together.”
The now-divorced celebrity couple have four children: eight-year-old North, six-year-old Saint, four-year-old Chicago and two-year-old Psalm.
Kardashian and West have been dating since 2012. In May 2014, they married with much pomp in the Italian city of Florence. Previously, they hosted a wedding party at the Palace of Versailles in France. In recent years, West, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has caused a stir with bizarre performances.
Kanye struggled
He ran for US President in 2020 and published very personal details about his family and marriage during the campaign, which Kardashian visibly displeased. In the summer of 2020, Kardashian publicly asked for compassion for her husband over his mental health struggles.
While the marriage-off is West’s first divorce, it’s Kardashian’s third. The reality TV star was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas and – for just 72 days – to basketball player Kris Humphries. The successful fashion entrepreneur, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes magazine at $1.8 billion (1.6 billion euros), is currently in a relationship with comedian Pete Davidson.
