Roman Abramovich wants to sell his football club, Chelsea FC. The British government’s handling of the oligarch is causing criticism among the citizens of Great Britain.
After the sanctions against Russia’s dictator Vladimir Putin, the oligarchs are also on the loose. Western governments are gradually confiscating property. The government of Great Britain is still proceeding somewhat hesitantly. One of the most famous oligarchs has several properties there: Roman Abramovich.
Roman Abramovich: London villa not confiscated
One of them is in the luxury London district of Kensington. It is still unclear what will happen to the villa. It has not yet been confiscated – to the displeasure of some Britons. On Thursday someone installed a fake blue English Heritage plaque on a pillar of the fence there. “Billionaire and Putin buddy,” it says, along with the oligarch’s name and the sentence: “It’s worth £150 million, but the government won’t confiscate it.” Abramovich has long been a big supporter of Vladimir Putin.
Many Britons find it incomprehensible that the government has not (yet) imposed sanctions on the current owner of the English football club Chelsea FC.
He was also close to Putin
Abramovich announced on Wednesday that he wanted to sell the club. “It’s really a very difficult decision for me that hurts a lot,” he said in an emotional statement. The proceeds of the sale – around three billion pounds are under discussion – should benefit the victims of the war.
According to the British newspaper “The Times”, Abramovich’s football club could be one of the reasons why no sanctions have been decided against him. So far, Abramovich has insisted he does not want the £1.5bn he loaned the club back. It is not known whether sanctions would influence the decision.
A few days ago, Abramovich’s daughter Sofia commented on Russia’s war against Ukraine. “The Kremlin’s biggest and most successful lie is that all Russians are behind Putin,” she posted on her Instagram story.
