According to a regulation by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which appeared in the Hungarian Official Gazette late Tuesday evening, people can enter Hungary from any neighboring country except Ukraine without any conditions or restrictions. It came into force immediately after its publication. The border block was mainly applied to tourists. There were numerous exceptions for business travelers, commuters, diplomats and athletes. Tourist entries by plane are still not possible.
Regardless of the now granted free entry, it still applies that commercial overnight stays are not possible for tourists. This does not apply to people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in one of the 17 countries with which Hungary has concluded agreements on the mutual recognition of the respective vaccination certificates. However, there is no western country among them.
With the lifting of the border blockade, the border controls introduced last September at the internal borders of the Schengen area will no longer apply. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had already announced this last week. This concerns the borders with Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia.
The government in Budapest justifies the relaxation in travel with the recently significantly lower number of infections with the corona virus.
