Wearing a brown, green and black camouflage poncho, black leggings and chunky shoes, Berni Wagner appeared on the Spinnerei stage in Traun on Thursday evening. “Is it okay how I’m dressed?” the cabaret artist asked the audience – and got the first laughs. He was with the type consultant, Berni Wagner explained his new look: “And I can only explain it to myself that I wasn’t her type.”
Fast-talk verbiage
The shallow jokes were clearly outnumbered in Wagner’s current program “Galapagos”, which has recently been awarded the program prize of the Austrian Cabaret Prize. Rather, the Vienna-based Gallneukirchner led like a colorful bird through his witty, humorous and well thought-out cabaret universe – with so much energy and good humor that Wagner’s fast-talking torrent of words, perfectly thrown into the audience, sometimes (over)challenged the viewers. “How long can he speak without breathing?” asked a stunned viewer himself.
The question of who is okay with what and how ran like a red thread through the program, which only showed slight lengths in the second part. In terms of content, Wagner grazed on current topics, from the organic trend (“What does organic mean? – Berni eats okay”) to vegan lifestyle (“People who don’t eat animal products because they don’t like them are not vegans, they’re just delicate “) and the climate crisis to newly invented forms of life such as solo amoria (“The sex is good, but it often doesn’t fit in character”).
In the end, of course, one question remains: Is Berni Wagner’s program okay? No, it’s much more. It entertains and at the same time makes you think. You can miss the type advice.
