He was one of the longest-serving audience favorites in Vienna’s Josefstadt district, where he had appeared on stage in more than 7,000 performances since 1966. Actor Christian Futterknecht died on Thursday at the age of 76. Born on July 28, 1945 in Gmunden, Futterknecht also grew up in the Salzkammergut. After graduating from high school, he attended the Vienna Max Reinhardt Seminar, from where he was brought directly to the Theater in der Josefstadt after his final exam in 1966.
However, the Vienna stage was not one of his only venues: Guest engagements have taken him to Hamburg, St. Gallen, the Vienna Theater of Youth and the Raimundtheater, among other places. In the Josefstadt he last played in 2017 in “Arsen and Lace Caps” and Hofmannsthal’s “The Difficult”.
Christianfutterknecht was a recipient of the Cross of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria and the Raimund Ring. Futterknecht received the latter in 2003 for his interpretation of Ferdinand Raimund roles, for example at the Salzburg Festival.
