The possibility of developing a sequel to “I am legend” has been the subject of rumors since 2012, although it never took shape. The original film, co-written by Goldsman and Mark Protosevich and directed by Franclis Lawrence, was praised by critics and audiences alike and grossed nearly $600 million at the box office.
Based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, the film had had other previous adaptations but none of this level of impact.
The plot followed virologist scientist Robert Neville (Smith) in a desolate New York, hell-bent on finding a cure for the plague that killed much of humanity and turned many of the survivors into vampire-like creatures.
The film had a lethal ending for Neville’s character, although it is speculated that in order for Smith to return the sequel will follow the proposed alternate ending released as an extra on the I Am Legend DVD release. In that, more faithful to the novel, the scientist managed to survive and escape from the Big Apple.
Both Smith and Jordan will executive produce the continuation of this story, it was added.
