Much mania, little star

Much mania, little star

Arabella Kiesbauer moderated the new Starmania season on Friday evening with a quasi-apology for the fact that the ORF shows young people singing in times of war. It should be 90 minutes “to take a deep breath”. In view of the great suffering in Ukraine, cynicism is not appropriate, but the start of the talent show “Starmania 22” (ORF1) was more of an incentive to finally go to bed earlier.

The mixed performance of the first 14 of 28 candidates has many reasons. Above all, compared to the previous year, the singing quality of the participants left a lot to be desired. Standing there stiffly and missing the notes again and again, that certainly doesn’t make a star. The jurors also don’t seem to have done a good job.

Chief judge “Josh” talked a lot after the contributions – but mostly about himself and the beginnings of his career. Singer Tina Naderer found almost every performance good, but was also reflective. But the biggest mystery before the show and afterwards is: What competent contribution can Lili Roncalli make to be a career springboard for karaoke singing stars? In terms of content, the girlfriend of tennis ace Dominic Thiem didn’t have much to offer except for a few mumbled and not very revealing feedback for the singers (along with a lot of their own bare skin being displayed).

The young Upper Austrian Valentina Thoms was a ray of hope in the show, which was proclaimed a mania and ultimately had little star appeal. The 15-year-old surprised with the Billie Eilish song “idontwannabeyouanymore” performed in a strong and confident voice. She received a so-called star ticket from Tina Naderer, which was equivalent to direct promotion to the next round. “I don’t think you’re aware of how good you are,” Naderer explained her decision.

“I was very happy about the reactions of the jury and I’m proud that I really dared to do it,” says the student from Altmünster. She still sees some room for improvement: “I still want to show many facets and styles.” At her next appearance on March 18, she either wants to switch to soul music or present a song in German.

Then maybe in front of a larger TV audience. The ratings were underground, only 410,000 people (older than twelve years) saw the show (market share 15 percent). Last year, twice as many viewers watched the first episode of Starmania 21 in front of the television.

In the second preliminary round on Friday, 8.15 p.m., ORF1, Katharina Satzinger from St. Marien sings.
