Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has sharply attacked Germany because of the new sanctions imposed by Western states. He went into court particularly harshly with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
After the new EU sanctions against Belarus, the ruler Alexander Lukashenko attacked Germany. “What we did not expect is that Germany will also participate in this collective conspiracy,” said the 66-year-old on Wednesday night, according to the state agency Belta, in the city of Brest in the west of the country. The occasion was the 80th anniversary of the attack by Hitler’s Germany on the Soviet Union, which Belarus and other former Soviet states commemorated on Tuesday.
Lukashenko said that he did not expect those “whose ancestors killed every third Belarusian” to participate in the sanctions. At the same time he attacked Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD), who had previously said about the goals of the EU economic sanctions: “In this way we want to contribute to the fact that this regime is financially dried up.” Lukashenko said: “Mr. Maas, who are you? A repentant German or a legacy of the Nazis?” He should answer it publicly.
EU imposes economic sanctions against Belarus
On Monday, the EU foreign ministers imposed far-reaching economic sanctions on Belarus in response to the ongoing repression against civil society and democratic opposition in the former Soviet republic. The EU, USA, Canada and Great Britain had already initiated entry and property bans against the defense and transport ministers. In total, several dozen people and institutions are affected by the punitive measures.
After the presidential election last August, which was widely regarded as falsified, hundreds of thousands of people protested against long-term ruler Lukashenko in Belarus. Tens of thousands of people were temporarily arrested. He had been confirmed with 80.1 percent of the vote for a sixth term of office by the electoral commission.
With around 27 million deaths, the Soviet Union suffered more victims than any other country in World War II. The attack by the Nazis on June 22, 1941 marked the beginning of the Great Patriotic War for the communists.
