The Film Independent Spirit Awards they honor low- and mid-budget movies, and the glamorous ceremony taking place in Santa Monica, near Los Angeles, may provide a much-needed boost to smaller films like Gyllenhaal’s ahead of this month’s Oscars.

“Thank you so much for giving my fake penis a shout out,” Rex joked.

“The film was made for a million dollars, with a crew of 10 people and without permits,” he added.

“We hid from the police. We hid from the neighbors. I was running through the streets bare-bottomed. If that’s not the spirit of independent film, I don’t know what is.”
