Bicycle helmets at Warentest – cheap protects the best

14 bicycle helmets were tested – eight of them performed well. The Fischer Urban Plus offers the best protection for only 45 euros. This makes it the second cheapest helmet in the test; it only performed satisfactorily in other disciplines such as handling. So he missed the test victory.

A bicycle helmet is not an insurance against accidental damage, after all, the helmet only protects part of the head. But it is particularly sensitive. An unbraked impact of only 10 km / h can lead to serious injuries, from around 16 km / h serious damage is almost inevitable. A helmet significantly reduces the damage to the head. However, you shouldn’t expect miracles – if you hit a road pole at 25 km / h, the helmet may still protect the skull, but it no longer protects the neck.

Models for adults were tested. In the laboratory, all models were tested at speeds of up to 22 kilometers per hour with an impact on the forehead, back of the head and side. As is usually the case, the auditors are stricter than the legal standards. Rotational movements of the helmet that act on the neck were also measured. It was also tested whether the helmet could be removed.

Mips has no decisive influence

Some helmets work with “Mips”, which stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. The helmet then consists of two shells. It’s not a miracle cure, even helmets without Mips performed well. We recommend helmets with an additional light on the helmet – but here the battery must be charged regularly. High-tech helmets with indicators and brake lights were not represented and are also not compliant with the StVO.

In any case, a helmet should be tried before buying. The fit and the way the helmet is put on are individually different and cannot be adequately represented by a test. It is not only the size that is decisive, but also the shape of the head. Unfortunately, it was also not a criterion whether the helmet could be easily secured with the lock. In everyday life you don’t want to walk around with your helmet in your hand, but given the sometimes steep prices you don’t want to leave a helmet unsecured on your bike.

Tour-De-France -Look

As always when choosing the foundation, most of the models follow the classic shape with wide ventilation slots. Ventilation is important for endurance athletes, less so for e-bike riders and leisurely short-distance cyclists. Unfortunately, this type of helmet always looks a bit like Tour de France and is a horror for fashion-conscious people. Of the good, only the one offers a different design. However, it also costs 160 euros, but there is at least an LED rear light. With a grade of 2.1, the Nutcase came third. The test winner was the for 120 euros with a grade of 1.8. As the only model, it achieved very good handling and comfort. In second place (1.9) came the for 160 euros. The offered the best protection, but only achieved an overall grade of 2.4 – its price of 45 euros still makes it the price-performance winner in this test.
