“Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler arrested after being mistaken for a bank robber

According to the portal TMZ, which first reported the news based on a police report, Coogler was arrested after he went to Bank of America to make a transaction. The 35-year-old manager, wearing a hat, sunglasses and a face mask, went to the counter and handed the cashier a withdrawal slip with a note written on the back that reportedly read: “I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please count the money elsewhere. I would like to be discreet.

The teller, however, misinterpreted the situation as an attempted robbery when the transaction amount triggered an alarm in the banking system. The cashier then informed her boss about her and together they called the police.

Authorities who arrived at the scene reportedly detained two people in a van waiting for Coogler outside the bank and also handcuffed the manager.

Coogler has been filming the sequel to the superhero movie, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, in Atlanta. The film will be released in November.

Since the renewed Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of police, there has been increased scrutiny of incidents of racism in countless industries, and a focus on racism in Hollywood. The movement has also encouraged more Black and people of color in the industry to speak out about their experiences.
