The premiere of the pompous “Bühnenweihefestspiel” with guest singer Heiko Börner in the title role is on Saturday in the Musiktheater. The musical direction is in the hands of Markus Poschner and the Bruckner Orchestra, with a total of around 200 participants. The production is directed by head of drama Stephan Suschke.
The Parzival plot, on which Richard Wagner’s text is also based, combines Christian elements with pagan cults, it is about the contrasts between men’s and women’s worlds, about guilt and redemption, sexuality, fantasies of healing and paradise. The Grail is Jesus’ revered miraculous communion vessel, the bleeding spear is a relic from Jesus’ cross. For conductor Markus Poschner, the plot is oratorio-like. The work requires a “gigantic orchestra, but that’s our specialty.”
Borner’s role debut
Heiko Börner celebrates his role debut as Parsifal on Saturday. The German tenor has already appeared in Linz as Tristan in “Tristan und Isolde” and Richard Strauss’ “Die Frau ohne Schatten” in the role of the emperor. All other main roles are played by the ensemble: Martin Achrainer (Amfortas), William Mason (Titurel), Michael Wagner (Gurnemanz), Adam Kim (Klingsor) and Katherine Lerner (Kundry). Choir, extra choir, children’s and youth choir of the Landestheater Linz complete the band of singers.
