The Nottingham native, who has been a superfan for as long as he can remember, found out about the work after his brother tagged him in an online ad looking for people to see the creation of Matt Groening and analyze his predictions for the future, something that has added to the fame of the series, considered a prophet of popular culture.
“About 10 people shared the post with me because all my friends and family know about my unhealthy obsession with the show,” Townley said, as shared by the New York Post.
The young man said he found the show “absolutely fascinating” as well as perennially relevant, as “it’s a reflection of society and based on stereotypes!”
“For example, a fat American father with a trophy wife and children, a pig-nosed police officer, and a school principal with irritatingly good posture,” he explained.
Now, as part of her job, “I’m asked to critically analyze every episode and I get to stuff my mouth with free vegan donuts that are sent to me every week. Who wouldn’t love that?” Townley gushed.
In fact, the cartoon connoisseur said no one believed him about his enviable job until he started getting donuts in the mail. Until then, people looked at me less because I’m always at home watching The Simpsons, but now “some of my colleagues are jealous, although happy for me.”
However, while getting paid to watch TV might sound like his dream job, the Simpsons pro says it’s not all fun and games.
“It’s not as simple as watching a few episodes and relaxing on the couch,” insisted Townley, who works at a cafe during the day. “I have to sit down with a notepad and pen and I have to write down every little detail, even the opening credits with the whiteboard sequence and the couch joke.”
“There have even been weeks where I’ve watched up to 30 episodes in a day, multiple days in a row, and that really is mentally draining,” he added.
Townley’s goal is to look for anything related to the future in the clairvoyant cartoon, credited with predicting everything from 9/11 to the coronavirus pandemic. Townley’s findings are then sent to his employer PlatinCasino.co.uk.
And although the animation analyst has kept his results secret, he suggested that some episodes of “The Simpsons” could even have predicted his own life.
“There have been a few times where I’ve seen characters like Marge sit down and analyze TV shows like ‘Itchy & Scratchy’ with a notepad and pen and I’ve been like, wait, what the fuck, that’s literally what I’m doing. doing right now,’” Townley said.
“I know for a fact that the creators of ‘The Simpsons’ know about this work, so if you’re reading this, Mr. Groening, I’d love to appear in an episode based on this crazy work!” Townley said. “I’ve never been to the United States either, so if they could take me there and I could work with them, that would be amazing.”
