Pixar employees denounce that Disney censors content linked to the LGBTIQ+ community

According to the specialized site Variety, the company’s workers decided to prepare the letter as a result of a memo sent days ago by Bob ChapekCEO of the giant Mickey Mouse, in relation to the legislative approval in Florida of the project known as “Don’t Say Gay” (“Do not say gay”, in Spanish).

The controversial initiative, which the Republican Party managed to impose in the state Senate and which had promoters linked to Disneybears the official title “Parents’ Rights in Education Act,” and states that school districts are prohibited from encouraging discussion of topics such as sexual orientation or gender identity in elementary education or in a manner “inappropriate” for the age of the students.

After the strong reaction to the case from both male and female students as well as teachers and other members of the educational system, Chapek said that the “greatest impact” that Disney could promote when it comes to “creating a more inclusive world” is through “the production of inspirational content”.

Quickly, the employees of pixar They resolved to point out the contradictions between these discourses and the realities they experience on a daily basis, which contradict the interest of creatives in generating materials that include demonstrations of affection between characters of the same gender.

To date, Pixar has only featured a few LGBTIQ+ roles in its feature films, with the notable example being the fantasy film “United” (2020), in which Lena Waithe voices a homosexually oriented character.

“We call on Disney leaders to immediately withdraw their financial support for those legislators who support the bill, to denounce them publicly and to compensate for their involvement,” the workers continued in the statement.

In that sense, they added that “if Disney is genuine about its values, it will take a public and decisive stand against discriminatory legislation, and offer tangible support for LGBTIQ + communities affected by the fanatical laws that are expanding in the United States. Many hate groups are trying to eradicate us through laws, and we need you to join us without empty words.”
