The large number of visitors is due to the fact that it is one of the few glaciers in the world that can be accessed by land by car to the very wall of the ice mass and appreciate it in all its magnitude, thanks to a complex of walkways that allow you a splendid observation, from different angles.
Ana María and Héctor are an older couple from Buenos Aires who often come to El Calafate. “Every time we come to El Calafate we come to the glacier. It is an unmissable tour and despite the fact that we have come many times, each time we arrive it is different, it is not the same landscape, the glacier changes, it surprises you and suddenly there is a detachment and it is wonderful to be able to observe it”, says Ana María.
A little further on, leaning on the railing of one of the viewpoints, seven bikers from La Pampa stop on their journey to appreciate the beauty of the glacier.
Claudio, Horacio, Juan Carlos, Sergio, Darío, Enzo and Rudy, have been traveling from Ushuaia and it is the first time that their tour stops at El Calafate and therefore it is the first visit to the glacier.
“We are impressed, this is magnificent. It has really surprised us all and we do not regret choosing this route at all,” says Horacio, who explains that they do this every year, choosing different destinations in Argentina to travel on their 6 BMW motorcycles. and a Yamaha.
Walking along the catwalks it is also possible to meet Italian, French, English, American and Brazilian visitors.
Livia and Domenico are from the Italian Marche region and have been in Argentina for a few days. “We came from Buenos Aires first to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, because some friends who had been here a few years ago recommended it to us. Now we are able to travel and we are going to take advantage of it because we were locked up for a long time due to this pandemic,” explains Domenico in his language.
Lizzethe and Anne are French, long-time friends and forever travel companions, who were in Bariloche and traveled the route of the seven lakes, but they say that the glacier exceeds everything they have seen so far.
The rupture of the Perito Moreno Glacier is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive natural phenomena that has been seen in recent times.
The last one was in March 2018 and since then the arch between Brazo Rico and Lago Argentino has not been re-formed, which marks one of the most spectacular phenomena of nature.
It is common to hear that the rupture of the Moreno is a phenomenon that is repeated cyclically every three or four years, but this regularity has only occurred on a few occasions in recent years.
The Perito Moreno Glacier has an area of 257 km2, advances at a speed of 2.2 meters per day in the center and 0.35 meters per day on the edges, and is 30 kilometers long.
The width of the glacier front is approximately 4 kilometers and at its highest line it reaches 1,150 meters above sea level and has remained stationary since 1917, being one of the few glaciers in the world with this condition, since the most are in decline.
The imposing mass of endless ice surrounded by forests and mountains is a spectacle that few want to miss, and another way to appreciate it is through a navigation, which approaches the north face.
Under the guidance of Lucas, the Cruz del Sur boat faced the enormous wall of ice and its imposingness became even greater at the short distance.
The exclamations of the hundreds of tourists who cling to the railing of the boat observe the blue and white mass with wide open eyes, are a substantial reflection of what lies ahead.
A halo of infinite peace over virgin nature makes the Perito Moreno Glacier a great attraction for those who want to enjoy the fresh air and the sound of silence.
Sound that only interrupts the movement of the glacier, which constantly gives Lake Argentino immense blocks of ice, which, when released from the ablation base, fall into the Canal de los Témpanos, producing a deep and shocking roar.
The Glacier can be reached on land walks or by alternating navigation stages on the route, and if the visitor arrives with their own vehicle, they must travel approximately 80 km along Provincial Route No. 15 from El Calafate, which takes an hour and a half. travel average.
