So the whole circle of creation strides out in the narrow wooden house, and wanders with deliberate speed from heaven through the world to hell.
This is how Goethe’s text “Vorspiel auf dem Theater” closes, which the poet put in front of his “Faust”. With these verses Klaus-Maria Brandauer open the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks 2022 in the Stadttheater Gmunden on June 22nd. The date is no coincidence: the theater was opened on this day 150 years ago – and the ceremony set in motion a dazzling hustle and bustle through all artistic disciplines until August 21st.
The management team with Christian Hike (Artistic Director), Johanna Mitterbauer (commercial director) and head of theatre/literature Karin Bergman has threaded a string of pearls of offerings. And Bergmann lets the sparks fly for another anniversary: 125 years ago, the Austrian premiere of Arthur Schnitzler’s “Freiwild” took place here. This piece will be performed in a scenic reading (including with Burgtheater actress Marie Luise Stockinger) commanded. The exciting director Franz Xaver Mayr stages Schnitzler’s most famous drama “Reigen” (reported by OÖN), and there are also readings Michael Heltau, Chris Pichler and Herman Bell, Sven Eric Bechtolf and August Zirner, Peter Simonischek and Brigitte KarnerEncounters with the Playwright Thomas Doctor (to “Else – without Miss”) and an entertaining background Harold Schmidtwho, among other things, with Burgtheater actress Caroline Peters chats about God and the world. A fine balance between Schnitzler and Thomas Bernhard.
The concert program shines with star tenor Piotr Beczala and the Bruckner Orchestra Linzalso with percussion warhorses Martin Grubinger and top violinists Benjamin Schmidt. Pop culture comes with the band My Ugly Clementine on the move, and cabaret artist Michael Mittemeier is a good seducer to forget the stresses of everyday life. “Gmunden Photo”, the show “BestOFF” by students from the Linz Art University and the initiated sculpture park (Toscana) with works by Bruno Gironcoli until Erwin Wurm are just three examples of the outstanding in the fine arts. No wonder Johanna Mitterbauer is aiming to beat the record set in 2021 (15,000 visitors). (pg)
