Pritzker Architecture Prize goes to Francis Kr

The architect Francis Kéré, who comes from Burkina Faso and lives in Berlin, will receive the Pritzker Prize 2022, the highest award for architecture. “He knows intuitively that architecture is not about the object, but about the goal,” said the jury in Chicago as a reason. The honor moved him to tears, said the architect, who was born Diébédo Francis Kéré in West African Burkina Faso in 1965, in the New York Times.

“I still can’t believe it. I pushed this work in architecture to bring quality architecture to my people.”

In addition to his home country, Kéré has worked on architectural projects in Mali, Kenya, Uganda, the USA and Germany, among other places. He also became known for his work on the “Operndorf Afrika” directed by Christoph Schlingensief, who died in 2010.

The Pritzker Prize is considered the most prestigious award in the architecture industry and is endowed with 100,000 dollars (around 91,000 euros). Previous awardees have included Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Norman Foster and Peter Zumthor. Kéré is the first Pritzker Prize winner to come from an African country.
