TikTok will contribute financially to the celebration of the festival, starting from the next edition that will be held from May 17 to 28, coinciding with the 75th anniversary. Cannes’ association with TikTok seeks to connect the festival with the more than one billion users that this platform has throughout the world, establishing it as a top-level entertainment destination. Within this strategy, the first #TikTokShortFilm is also being developed: a global competition for vertical short films between 30 seconds and 3 minutes long.
The #TikTokShortFilm jury will be chaired by a well-known filmmaker whose name will be announced later, and who will be in charge of awarding three awards in one act with Fremaux present. The selection of Cannes films, on the other hand, will not be detailed until April, and although its alliance with TikTok may seem unlikely, after all, both brands seek to strengthen emerging talent. Rich Waterworth, general director of TikTok in Europe, considers Cannes “an iconic event that has forever changed the world cinema landscape”, and seeks to “open more creative possibilities for our community, while enjoying themselves united by the shared love of video. and the cinema”.
“We are truly honored to welcome them as an official partner. Fans from all over the world come to TikTok to be entertained, express themselves or discover something new, but they share a rewarding sense of community like nowhere else,” concluded Waterworth. As for Frémaux, he claims to be curious and wanting TikTok to “expand the magic of the festival to a broader audience, much more global and just as movie-loving as the previous one.”
“Cannes has been connecting with the new generation of film enthusiasts by offering them the opportunity to experience the festival through the ‘3 Days in Cannes’ programme”, recalled Frémaux, who ultimately attributes this collaboration to his desire to “diversify the audience”.
