¨In the conversation about vermouth, the flavor profile should not be minimized: the use of botanicals makes vermouth malleable by nature. And while the specific ingredients vary, vermouth has an excellent flavor profile, a balanced mix of bitter and sweet, all with an ABV less than half that of most spirits and not much higher than the strongest red wines of today¨, highlights, Stephanie JacobsGroup Manager of Campari Group.
What is vermouth?
This drink of Italian origin is made using wine macerated with herbs and botanicals. Vermouth has a heritage that dates back to the Middle Ages. The two predominant styles of vermouth – Italian red rosso and French dry white vermouth – were created and marketed more than two centuries ago. The first commercial vermouths emerged in Italy at the end of the 18th century; the French soon followed suit, and in these countries, as well as in Spain and clearly in Argentina, there is still a vibrant culture of the aperitif, with glasses of vermouth that facilitate the passage between the rigors of the working day and the calm of dinner.
Enjoyed in this way, vermouth is an inherently social drink, so it is fitting that the conception of today’s innovative vermouths began on social occasions.
Its name derives from the German word wermut: wormwood, an essential medicinal plant in the aromatization of these wines. The dynamics of the language have continued to transform the word vermouth, which became popular among us in two ways: vermouth or, definitively Argentinized, vermouth.

Vermouth, the new trend
After a period in which the local consumer looked to the world in search of the latest trends, he found in local traditions the space to develop new habits with their own modern characteristics. The bars and confectioneries were remodeled maintaining their style, the classic restaurants were once again filled with people and new vermouth bars were created that take tradition and adapt it to the contemporary world.
Driven in part by the craft movement and supported by the consumption preferences of younger generations, market estimates suggest that vermouth will have generated around 12.41 billion dollars in 2021.
