This decision could be a healthy change of perspective for Disney, whose treatment of the LGBTIQ+ community in its content has been heavily criticized., as well as its behavior as a company in recent times. Pixar’s complaint describes that they were “witness beautiful stories, packed with diverse characters, that were reviewed by corporate Disney and ripped to shreds” compared to what had been originally intendedassured the complainants, who also considered that “even if the production of LGBTIQ+ content were the solution to discriminatory laws in the worldwe are forbidden to create it.”

The company’s workers decided to prepare the letter as a result of a memo sent days ago by Bob Chapek, CEO of the giant Mickey Mouse, in relation to the legislative approval in Florida of the project known as “Don’t Say Gay” (“Don’t say gay”, in Spanish). The controversial initiative, which the Republican Party managed to impose in the state Senate and which had promoters linked to Disney, bears the official title “Parents’ Rights in Education Act”, and states that school districts are prohibited from encouraging discussion of topics such as sexual orientation or gender identity in elementary education or in a way that is “inappropriate” for students’ age. After the strong reaction that the case aroused both by students and teachers and other members of the educational system, Chapek said the “biggest impact” Disney could promote in “creating a more inclusive world” is through “producing inspiring content.”

Quickly, Pixar employees resolved to point out the contradictions between these discourses and the realities they experience on a daily basis, which contradict the interest of creatives for generating materials that include displays of affection between characters of the same gender. To the present, Pixar only featured a few LGBTIQ+ roles in its feature films, with the notable example being the fantasy film “United” (2020), in which Lena Waithe voices a gay-oriented character.
