Across the inner courtyard at Reindlstraße 16-18 in Linz-Urfahr and up to the fourth floor: Here the visitor is welcomed by the “Sonnensteinloft”, a completely redesigned development and development space of the RedSapata association in the former rooms of the Linz Art University, the had to pitch camp in the former tobacco factory in Linz.

“It was as clear as day that we wanted to be here,” says Ilona Roth, who shares the management with Ulrike Hager: There are three rehearsal studios between 50 and 180 square meters in an inviting atmosphere, the largest of which also functions as a stage and, with its technical equipment, is the centerpiece of the Sonnsteinloft: the “Hybrid Space”. Three cameras, software and hardware enable live transmissions at the highest level. Interdisciplinary projects ranging from the performing arts to media art are to be created here, in which “independent disciplines dare to dance together,” says Cornelia Lehner. The cultural manager from Linz curates the hybrid space, which is funded by the federal government with the “Call 2021” for digital projects: 60 project proposals from more than 20 nations were submitted by the end of February. “By the end of March, we will select three to four projects to which residencies will be awarded in July and August,” says Lehner.

The projects will be about the interactive connection between a real and an online audience, about the opportunities and limits of the digital. Which brings up another pillar of the Sonnensteinloft: residencies in which artists can use rehearsal rooms and equipment for two to four weeks. “Last year we were able to facilitate 12 residencies, and nine artists are currently working here,” says Ulrike Hager. “Many encounters take place here to help each other out.” (Former) members of the State Theater Ensemble and graduates of the Bruckner University in Linz come and go in and out of the Sonnensteinloft. “We are an interface between the university and the entry into the profession.” Hobby dancers are also welcome. Countless workshops and courses with the professionals await you. (cash)
