In the province where the Zonda wind reigns, the wine tourism offer invites you to visit traditional vineyards, old and modern wineries, taste wines and sparkling wines born in the valleys of San Juan.
The main wine-growing terroirs in the province of San Juan are the valleys of Tulum, Zonda, Ullum, Calingasta and Valle de Pedernal.
THE WINERIES
The wineries that make up the San Juan Wine Route are located mainly in the surroundings of the provincial capital, where there are traditional and other avant-garde wine establishments.
There are also wineries -and vineyards- in a natural setting of disturbing beauty, where the undertakings are of a boutique type. Here the owners themselves receive travelers to accompany them on a guided tour that allows them to appreciate a production that combines artisanal processes and advanced technology. To the south of the city of San Juan, an area of exceptional fertility is home to companies that produce organic wines and sparkling wines.
Black Oak Wines
Winemaker Juan Pablo Ripalta runs this small project that produces very limited batches of designer or author wines, with grapes from the San Juan valleys, such as Pedernal, Calingasta, Tulum, Zonda and La Ciénaga. Its annual production is 20,000 bottles/year, among all the Valleys, prioritizing quality over quantity, carrying out manual harvesting and bunch selection, under traditional fermentation techniques, passing through French and American oak barrels.
Influenced Wines
This family project has been developed since 2018 by the oenologist Nahuel Aldalla, who worked for 10 years at Finca Las Moras and Pernod Ricard Argentina and currently works for a large wine group in San Juan, where 40 million kilos of grapes are moved year for production.
three freaks
They are signature wines made by winemaker Nicolás Ferreyra together with his friends Sebastián and Leonardo, for which they harvest the grapes themselves, rent vessels in a winery and actively participate in the entire process until they are sold. They use grapes from the Zonda Valley.
Casimiro Wines
This artisanal project by the winemaker Emiliano Lorenzo and Carlos Tinto began in 2018 and stands out for being located in the Calingasta Valley. It produces Torrontés wines from San Juan, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, with grapes acquired in the areas of Hilario, Barreal and Tamberías.
El Cansao Wines
Original project belonging to the winemaker Milenko Stusek Ramos, who has carried out ten vintages in Argentina, three in Napa Valley, one in Colchagua, Chile and another in Segovia, Spain. His winery is located in the Zonda Valley, a foothill oasis 30 km west of the city of San Juan.
Camunas Estate
The oenologist Juan Camuñas has run his own winery for 15 years, which produces very limited batches of signature wines. But before that, he also worked in the Veneto region of Italy, in the production of Prosecco DOC and harvested in Malborough, New Zealand. It has its own vineyards of the Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Viognier varieties, implanted in 2004 with an annual production of 15,000 bottles.
Its wines have obtained recognition in various competitions: XXXI San Juan Wine Tasting 2019, Vinandino and Malbec al Mundo 2018. They also have excellent scores between 90 and 92 from the English critic James Suckling. Camuñas produces in conjunction with the outstanding winemaker Paco Puga (Bodega El Porvenir de Cafayate and own projects) with grapes from the Pedernal Valley.
Argus Winery and Vineyards
It is a boutique winery run by its own owners, Gustavo and Gabriel Chiconi, located in the department of Santa Lucía, Province of San Juan. It is a family winery that began in 2016 and that reaches a production of 15,000 liters per year, of the Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscatel varieties, from various origins such as Pedernal, Tulum and Cañada Honda.
Desfachatados Wines
From the hand of two young winemakers, Abel Chiconi and Federico Riveros, this young project was born, launching in 2021, with three good wines from the Pedernal Valley animated by modern and fun labels.
San Juan has a diversified production matrix, with an impact on mining, agro-industrial, industrial and energy development. Mining, tourism, financial, logistics, transportation services; as well as, the infrastructure for production, have an important role in our economic activity.
Today the province, through an event that takes place in Buenos Aires (Encuentro de Vinos de San Juan, in the house of San Juan: Origen San Juan) supports small producers to present their wines to the public of the Argentine capital. Action that corresponds to a General Positioning Plan for San Juan and its products.
