“True Detective” premiered in 2014 with the protagonists of McConaughey and Harrelson as detectives “Rust” Cole and Martin Hart, an unequal duo between correctness and rebellion who, after facing a bloody homicide case in 1995, suffer almost two decades then the harsh emotional consequences of the investigation.

The proposal, which explored issues such as pessimism, masculinity and Christianity with a deep and sensitive lens, was a success among critics and HBO audiences and gave rise to the production of two subsequent seasons.

The second, not so well received, had Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in the lead roles as two California cops who must cooperate in the face of the rise of a criminal kingpin played by Vince Vaughn; while the better-reviewed third starred two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff at the helm of a stark tale of two lost boys in the mountainous region of the American Ozarks.
