Musikfestival Szene Openair withdrew the cancellation

From July 29th to 31st there will be a festival “as always” with performances by Parov Stelar, Yung Hurn, Raf Camora, Russkaja, Voodoo Jürgens, Jinjer, Wurst and other acts. Music lovers were apparently enthusiastic about the news, the ticket server collapsed at the start of advance sales on Tuesday. Initially, the festival was canceled for the second year in a row.

“The omens have changed,” said festival director Hannes Hagen to the APA, explaining why the largest rock and alternative festival in western Austria is now taking place. After the federal government announced loosening of visitor capacity, mask requirements, curfew and distance rules from July 1, the organizing cultural and youth association Szene Lustenau got back into planning. How do you get a festival off the ground that would otherwise take a year and a half of planning within a few weeks? “The answer is simple: We have been doing this for 30 years. We are a well-rehearsed team. Much of the planning work usually takes place in June,” says Hagen.

Fixing the program has been a challenge in the past two weeks. “Many artists are not on tour this summer, which increases the organizational effort considerably,” explained the festival director. He now hopes “that everything will work out”. Changes are of course always possible in the current situation, one remains flexible. The Scene Openair program this year is varied as usual, ranging from rock to hip-hop to electronic music. “On Thursday we will focus on bands with strong female protagonists,” said Hagen. The scene also has a tradition of bands performing on the big stage that are not in the commercial music business. “You hardly ever hear them at a big festival. This regionality makes up our special flair and increases the emotions,” says the festival director.

For the Verein Szene Lustenau, the largely voluntary holding of its largest annual event means a “huge opportunity”, on the one hand to revive the life of the club, and on the other, “we are pleased to be able to offer a festival again to visitors who appreciate our kind of culture” . The team aspires to organize a festival “as omitted as ever”. The preliminary talks with the authorities have been “motivating” so far, but the regulation that will then apply is still missing, and only then are final talks possible, said Hagen.

The 3G proof – tested, recovered, vaccinated – will of course be checked with the guests during the incoming check, and there will also be disinfectant dispensers, and autograph sessions will be dispensed with. The news of the “Nundoch scene” delighted music lovers at home and abroad. After the start of advance sales on Tuesday evening, the ticket system collapsed despite additional capacities. “We have never had such a rush,” said Hagen, who was expecting the festival to be sold out. After the problems have been resolved, advance sales should start again on Thursday evening. Tickets purchased for 2020 and 2021 are valid. If you can’t be there this year, you can rebook your ticket to 2022 free of charge until July 7th. In 2019, the Szene Openair welcomed almost 25,000 visitors over three days.
