Italy wants to ban gasoline and diesel cars by 2040

From 2040, no more cars with gasoline or diesel engines will be registered, reported Transport Minister Enrico Giovannini in an interview with the Roman daily newspaper “La Repubblica” (Thursday edition).

“We are facing a revolution,” said the minister. He announced incentives to renew the vehicles in Italy. At the same time, the government around Prime Minister Mario Draghi wants to invest 600 million euros in the development of cycle paths thanks to the financing of the EU reconstruction program “Recovery Plan”. “This will change our cities, but also the country, because we will be able to develop new forms of tourism,” said the minister.

Italy intends to spend 41 billion in infrastructure and mobility thanks to the funding from the “Recovery Plan”. At the same time, the country wants to invest in the integration of air and rail traffic. “High-speed trains have to get to the airports,” said the minister. In five years, the high-speed rail network is also to be expanded significantly in southern Italy.

A billion investment “to turn them into green havens” is planned for the ports. The government also wants to reduce the number of logistic times in order to reduce the environmental impact, the minister said.
