Putin compares Russia’s “cancel” to JK Rowling – that’s how she replies

In a bizarre speech, Vladimir Putin compared the handling of Russian culture with criticism of JK Rowling and her opinion on the gender debate. Apparently the author didn’t like it.

The term “cancel culture” has now made it into Vladimir Putin’s war rhetoric. At a virtual meeting with Russian cultural workers, the dictator was upset that the West was “cancelling” his country’s art and culture.

Vladimir Putin laments the “cancel culture” in the West

“Today they are trying to destroy an entire thousand-year-old culture, our people,” he said, mentioning “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling. “She [der Westen] have canceled JK Rowling, the children’s author whose books are published around the world, for failing to meet gender rights requirements. They are trying to cancel our country – I’m talking about progressive discrimination against everything related to Russia,” Putin said.

The background: Rowling has been criticized for her statements about the gender debate for some time. She is accused of transphobia because she repeatedly speaks out against the legal equality of trans women with other women and adopts anti-trans rhetoric. It is important to note that while Rowling has received criticism and some fans have turned their backs on her, her books continue to be sold and bought.

JK Rowling responds on Twitter

The writer doesn’t like the fact that Putin of all people is taking her side. She reacted on Twitter and found clear words. “Criticism of Western cancel culture should perhaps not be voiced by those who are currently slaughtering civilians (…) or imprisoning and poisoning their critics,” she wrote on the short message service, linking to a BBC report on Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny . Rowling added the hashtag “I Stand With Ukraine”.
