The advance of streaming, Trump’s presidency, culture wars from #MeToo to #blacklivesmatter, the pandemic – since 2015 the Oscars have been the scene of enormous upheaval. Now Amy Schumer, one of the three moderators of tomorrow’s gala, even demanded a live connection to the Ukrainian President Zelenskyj. Whether the TV window into the war will actually be opened is still an open question, as is the race in terms of film art. An overview:
It’s going to be historical. so close to “Oscar of Oscars” for best film Netflix thanks to “The Power of the Dog” never. What the digital service with “Roma” (eleven nominations in 2019) could finally work with the celebrated western by Jane Campion: Netflix would be the first streaming provider to get the most important gold man. Failure to do so would be an equally historic rebuff.

She needs to make her understand why becoming a singer is a good idea. Jump on the academy dedicated to social justice “coda” well, that wouldn’t be a surprise. To other favorites like “Belfast” or “Dune” (see box) it has become quiet.

A from a European perspective there is an unusual duel in the race for the best leading actress. So far it was considered “turned off”that Kristen Stewart for her brilliant portrayal of Lady Di in the cinema film “spencer” should win. Developed in the US Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”) in the movie “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” an absolute favorite (new on Disney+, page 24). It follows the scandalous life of TV preacher Tammy Faye Bakker (page 24). While unknown to us, she was a star in the US, which could be very much in line with the American-style Academy. More and more Oscar films are based on US entertainment – like the three-time nominee “Being The Ricardos” about the comedian couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (Amazon) or “lack” (Netflix) about the author of “Citizen Kane” (eleven nominations 2021). They do not strengthen the Oscar as ambassadors of world cinema.
