Television: Comedian Olli Dittrich: War is not an issue for comedy

Hard times for gag writers too: the Ukraine war leaves little room for jokes. A challenge for Olli Dittrich’s bathrobe hero «Ditsche», who nevertheless comes back onto the stage.

Cult comedian Olli Dittrich (65) has thought about canceling his upcoming tour because of the Ukraine war. It’s supposed to take place now – but the comedian doesn’t want to edit the topic humorously.

“To make the current war part of some gag would be deeply inappropriate, thoughtless, shameful, simply unspeakable,” Dittrich told the editorial network Germany (RND, Saturday). “The immeasurable suffering of the people in Ukraine leaves no room for me to somehow generate a comic twist for the stage.”

From next week until May, Dittrich will be back on stages nationwide with his character “Dittsche” – the unemployed loser guy from the snack bar wearing a bathrobe. The character is particularly close to him, said Dittrich, who toured Germany for the first time in autumn 2019 with “Dittsche”. The success of the stage program surprised him. “I was really unsure at first, but I always think anyway: Nobody is coming.”

It is currently open whether “Dittsche” will also be shown on television with new episodes. “It may well be that the seven episodes from spring 2021 were the last.” So far, there has been no comment from the broadcaster on planning a new season. The improvisation show was broadcast on WDR television.
