Norwegian actress Liv Ulmann, one of the favorites of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, famous for her roles in the classic films “Persona” and “Secrets of a Marriage”, and Elaine May, who broke barriers for women in comedy and directing.
Ulmann, 83, earned two best actress Oscar nominations in the 1970s for “The Emigrants” and “Face to Face.”
“To the few who say that she would never have been considered one of our great actresses without Ingmar Bergman, I would reply that Bergman probably would not have been considered one of our great filmmakers without Liv Ullman,” said John Lithgow in presenting the award.
Comedian Bill Murray was in charge of presenting the award to Elaine May, 89, nominated for an Oscar for best screenplay with “Heaven Can Wait” or “Primary Colors.”
The honorary awards are presented each year to recognize an artist’s career and have been held at a different event since 2009.
An award for political activism was also presented during the ceremony to Danny Glover, 75, star of the “Lethal Weapon” franchise and Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple.”
Glover has combined his 40-year career with campaigning for multiple causes, from the civil rights movement in the United States to the fight against apartheid in South Africa.
