Climate change: Volkswagen: criminal complaint after Greenpeace campaign in Emden

There have been quite a few actions by Greenpeace against Volkswagen in the past few weeks. The VW Group is now taking legal action against one that ended on a glacier.

Around a month after the Greenpeace campaign against Volkswagen in the port of Emden, the car manufacturer filed a criminal complaint.

“We do not tolerate any violations of the law,” said a VW spokeswoman in Emden on Wednesday and confirmed a corresponding report in the “Ostfriesen-Zeitung”. Volkswagen had previously announced that it would examine legal options against the Greenpeace campaign. The spokeswoman emphasized, however, that VW was still interested in a dialogue with the environmental protection organization.

The public prosecutor and the police are investigating around a dozen activists on charges of trespassing and particularly serious theft.

At the end of May, the activists had climbed over a fence onto a loading area in the port of Emden and removed the ignition keys from unlocked cars that were ready to be shipped overseas. Shortly afterwards, the organization brought the keys to a glacier on the Zugspitze in Bavaria. The environmental protection organization criticized that Volkswagen was switching too slowly to electric mobility. She chose the Schneeerner Glacier because it was particularly affected by climate change.

In the past few weeks there have been repeated actions by Greenpeace against Volkswagen. At the beginning of June, demonstrators broke into a construction site and the premises at the Group’s own power plant at headquarters in Wolfsburg. Last week, a Greenpeace campaign directed against VW failed at the German national soccer team’s first EM game in Munich. A 38-year-old man from Pforzheim in Baden-Württemberg made an emergency landing on the pitch shortly before the game between Germany and France kicked off and injured two men on the approach, who were hospitalized.
