“In this business you have to put up with people being disrespectful to you and you still have to smile,” said Want Smith in his speech after being awarded the leading actor Oscar on Monday night. As expected, Smith picked up the first trophy of his career for his performance in King Richard as the father of tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams. The 53-year-old emphasized that he wanted to be a protector for others.
What had happened before? During presenter Chris Rock’s performance, Will Smith ran onto the stage and slapped his colleague in the face. He then returned to his seat and shouted loudly twice in Rock’s direction, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth!” – he twice used the word “fucking”, which was frowned upon on US television, which was drowned out with a beep in the US broadcast.
Earlier, comedian Rock reached out to Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and quipped, “GI Jane 2 – I can’t wait to see it.” – a reference to the movie “GI Jane”, in which Demi Moore shaved her head as a soldier. Will Smith laughed at first, then got up from his seat.
Rock seemed surprised after the incident, but quickly recovered and quipped, “It was the greatest night in television history.” But it was initially unclear whether it was an actual outburst by Will Smith or a scene that had been agreed upon.
