Podcast “important today”: criminologist on right-wing extremist tendencies in the police

Bundestag police, SEK, KSK – reports of right-wing extremist or anti-constitutional statements are reaching the public from more and more departments of the police and armed forces. All individual cases? Or do we have a structural problem?

The shocking news from German police authorities seem to have been going on for weeks. The “taz” published research on the weekend, according to which several officials of the Bundestag police had made right-wing extremist statements or acted unconstitutional. For example, a policeman was involved in a party of the Reich Citizenship, another officer, according to a colleague, showed the Hitler salute several times in the break room and imitated the voice of Adolf Hitler. In addition, according to current and former Bundestag police officers, right-wing extremist content was regularly distributed in chat groups used on business. Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth is now calling for an independent study on right-wing extremism in the Bundestag police.

Criminologist calls for an attitude that conforms to human rights

About two weeks ago, the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office had made public investigations against 20 Hessian police officers. Among other things, they are accused of using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. The accused are a former police officer and 19 active officers who are no longer on duty. Most of the suspects are officials from the Frankfurt SEK. In response to this, Hesse’s interior minister announced that the Frankfurt SEK would be dissolved and rebuilt. Right-wing extremist incidents were also reported to the Special Forces Command. The unit, which does not belong to the police, but to the Bundeswehr, had to go through a reform process.

“Important Today” host Michel Abdollahi talks about the latest happenings and the mechanisms that fuel them Rafael Behr, Professor of Police Science with a focus on criminology and sociology at the University of Applied Sciences of the Hamburg Police Academy. He demands that an inner attitude is needed that conforms to human rights.
