Oskar Höfinger was born on April 2, 1935 in Golling an der Erlauf, Lower Austria. After an apprenticeship as a ceramist, he attended the technical school for wood and stone processing in Hallein from 1952 to 1956, and later the Academy of Fine Arts, where he was accepted into Fritz Wotruba’s class. In 1961 he completed his academic training with a diploma and started his career as a freelance artist. As a sculptor he worked with wood, iron, steel, sandstone, granite and marble.
He received commissions from renowned architects such as Clemens Holzmeister, the public sector and the Catholic Church. He had been a member of the Vienna Secession since 1971 and was appointed to the board in 1973. In 1999 he was awarded the professional title of professor, and in 2016 he also received the Gold Medal of Merit from the State of Vienna.
